This is a book that will tear you apart and rebuild you. A set of twins tells their story from different angles. Noah's story is the past, Jude's story is the present, but both are hurting and both have the answers to the questions that the other is asking. And as their stories get closer to merging, hope begins to be chiseled out of the mess their lives' have become. With characters that are fully formed and as deep as the ocean that fascinates them, Nelson's book tells of loss, betrayal and the transformative powers of art and love.  This is the book to get the teen who doesn't feel like another trite coming-of-age story to remind them of how special they are. Harry tells his story in a sincere voice, from being struck and scarred by lightning, to the complicated relationship he has with his best friend, when he starts a punk band.  Caustic, bittersweet, and accurately reminiscent of the angsty teenager, its brevity and addictiveness make it great for a reluctant reader.  (Ages 13+) Reviewed by Marie S. of Books Inc. What I like most about this book is that I feel like I know these characters because they closely resemble those I know in real life. Leila is an Iranian American lesbian that is trying to get out of high school without being noticed. She’s funny, smart, and not strong enough to fight her attraction to Saskia, the new girl. Throw in her old friend Lisa and you have the makings of touching, exciting, and hilarious love story. (Ages 14+) Reviewed by Karen B. of Compass Books, SFO

A thought provoking, taut, socio-political thriller dealing with the social and ethical implications of defending big pharmaceutical companies’ practices of keeping unsafe drugs on the market - Heroine Alix must decide whether to side with a small group of teens determined to expose the truth to save further casualties or lose her privileged life to protect her father and his public relations firm which obfuscates the truth.  Bacigalupi weaves several twists throughout with a fast-paced, gripping finale. The Lost Abhorsen is nothing short of stunning. Set 600 years before the birth of Sabriel (the first of the Abhorsen Trilogy), Clariel is the tale of how Clariel became a Free Magic Sorcerer. Very much reminiscent of Nix's Sabriel, Clariel has such strong female characters that take on roles and responsibilities that simply place these women in the seat(s) of power. Clariel is a young woman who is close kin to both the King and the Abhorsen but with little knowledge of either--Clariel soon becomes a pawn of the political upheaval in the Old Kingdom. Clariel, however, does not wish to take this responsibility as she wishes to find comfort in the solitude that she admires but is unable to do so for she discovers that her violent temper may have dire (and magical) consequences for her future. This novel (as well as the rest of the series) is a stupendously gorgeous read for anyone that enjoys a complex magical land where imagination is present and alive. Cute and romantic, LaCour has crafted a story where two young women find each other through incredible twists of fate and grow closer through their love of movies. As a film lover and an advocate for diverse books, I LOVED this novel. Emi’s passion for set design is very infectious and inspiring. This is a great, light, lovely read! “The Lizzie Bennet Diaries” is my favorite adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. The YouTube series has won an Emmy and gained a devoted following. This is the novelization of the web-series and it brings more depth to certain events not included in the series. One of my favorite books of all time! Wunder’s ability to capture the fleeting, ephemeral quality of youth is both beautiful and devastating. Museum of Intangible Things focuses on Hannah and Zoe, two best friends who are complete opposites. Hannah is sensible, hard-working, and “average” in the looks department. She owns her own hot dog cart, peddling sausages by the highway or at soccer games to the locals. Her parents are divorced, her father is an alcoholic, and her mother is manic-depressive. Zoe is bipolar. She’s creative, beautiful, sensitive, carefree, and completely unstable. After something terrible happens to Zoe at a party, she drags Hannah on a road trip across the country. Along the way Zoe teaches Hannah how to truly live. Museum of Intangible Things is heartbreaking and real. I dare to say Wendy Wunder is my favorite contemporary authors and she truly amazes me with everything she writes. (Ages 14+) Reviewed by Anna B. of Books Inc. Palo Alto

Karn is destined to take over his family’s farm in Norrongard, but he has absolutely no desire to do so. He would much rather play game after game of Thrones and Bones. Thianna is a half giantess, half human who is constantly trying to prove herself amongst her fellow Frost Giants. When dangerous and ancient creatures threaten their families, Thianna and Karn must flee their homes in hopes of finding out the truth and saving everyone they love.  Frostborn is a magical and exhilarating story that’s perfect for fans of Harry Potter and Fablehaven. I can even see it going as far as being a Game of Thrones for young readers. Dragons, wyverns, after walkers, and giants all play a part in this story making it exciting and magical. Anders’ use of Viking mythology also plays a subtle roll in Karn’s history and the legends of Norrongard, which always has me wanting more. We need more Viking stories! I loved it, and it’s definitely worth picking up! (Ages 9+) Reviewed by Anna B. of Books Inc. Palo Alto

My new favorite picture book to hand sell. Once I start to describe the plot people just melt! This is the story of Noi, the lonely son of a fisherman who finds a little whale washed ashore after a storm. Of course Noi takes him home, puts him in his bathtub, and shares with the little whale all about his life on the seashore. Noi's father eventually helps him reunite the whale with his family, which in turn brings Noi and his father closer together. The illustrations are so charming with details that add to its sweetness. Make sure to look out for all six cats! (Ages 4+) Reviewed by Samantha S. of Books Inc. Laurel Village
