Michael Schwab’s work is instantly recognizable—in fact, you can’t miss his signature style on the cover and in the pages of Alta Journal’s Summer 2021 issue. From his iconic designs for the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy’s various sites to labels for Peet’s Coffee, Schwab’s graphic art is part of the fabric of western life. The artist joins us from his Marin County studio to give us a tour, detail his process and inspiration, and answer your questions.

ABOUT THE GUEST: From his studio in Marin County, Michael Schwab has established a reputation as one of America’s most recognized graphic artists. His work is characterized by dramatic perspectives; bold, graphic portraits; and outdoor-related subjects.

Schwab’s list of clients includes the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, Peet’s Coffee, Robert Redford, Nike, Apple, Filson , Major League Baseball, the Bay Club, Levi Strauss & Co., and the San Francisco Opera.

Originally from Oklahoma, Schwab attended school in Texas, New York, and California. He turns to a broad array of cultural and geographic references for inspiration.
