Each volume of CMLC includes critical evaluations and interpretations by major critics and scholars of 4-6 authors of works of world literature, from the beginning of written culture to 1399 AD. In addition to classical (Greek and Roman) and medieval (European) authors and works, oriental literatures are also represented. Author and single-work entries already covered include Beowulf, Homer's Iliad, The Arabian Nights, Dante's Inferno, Sophocles, Lady Murasaki's The Tale of Genji, Cicero, and Gilgamesh. Three volumes are in print. This volume includes Aristophanes and the Poema de Mio Cid.
