Democracy, Development, and Decay: A Conversation with Francis Fukuyama
Francis Fukuyama, best known for his hugely influential The End of History and the Last Man, has published a provocative new book, Political Order and Political Decay. It argues that the key to political stability and economic growth is not culture, geography, or international competition, but the quality of political institutions—democracy, a strong, effective state, and the rule of law. But there is no ready-made recipe for success, and success is fragile: just consider the economic difficulties and political paralysis of the U.S. today. Join Fukuyama for a spirited debate with leading experts on American and Asian politics and economics on the origins and future of democracy and the “authoritarian-capitalist” challenge from China and other states.
