During the 1970s and 1980s Dowd wrote a sports column for The Washington Star and covered politics and pop culture for TIME magazine. Dowd joined the Times in 1983 and worked as a metropolitan reporter in New York and political correspondent in Washington before getting an op-ed column in 1995.
